Lift modernisation

After a lift has been in operation for around 20–25 years, it usually requires renovation—this is known as modernisation. At Motum, we have extensive experience in modernising all types of lifts.

Modernising a lift means retaining as many original components as possible and only replacing parts that are broken or no longer meet today’s standards for operational reliability and environmental impact. This way, you can achieve a modern and safe lift while preserving the original character.

Because as much as possible is reused, modernisation is a more environmentally friendly alternative to completely replacing the lift. Compared with a new installation, modernisation reduces the environmental impact by an amount equivalent to producing a 1,400 kg car.

Modernisation: the climate-smart choice for your lift

Sustainability is a key focus for us at Motum, both inside the lift shaft and beyond. That is why we advocate modernisation whenever possible.

Together with Chalmers University in Gothenburg, we have produced a report showing how much energy can be saved from a lifecycle perspective when choosing to modernise a lift.

The report demonstrates that modernisation results in at least 50% lower environmental impact compared with completely replacing the lift.

You can download the report here: “Livscykelanalys – En jämförelse mellan nyinstallation och modernisering av hissar”.

What does the regulation say?

Our companies carry out modernisations on all types of lifts, and you are free to choose the extent of the refurbishment, as long as you comply with the existing lift regulations.

It is important to keep in mind that the regulations have been updated over the years, so if you choose to refurbish a lift today, the safety requirements may be significantly higher than when the lift was originally installed.

You can read more about the regulations for modifications to existing lifts in the Swedish Elevator Association’s handbook for property owners.

Note: Measures that significantly extend a lift’s lifespan, such as installing new lift car panelling, are considered equivalent to replacing the lift car interior, and the subsequent requirements of the lift regulations (Chapter 2, Section 1) must also be met. Painting and wallpapering, however, are not considered measures that significantly extend the lift’s lifespan.

Guide to Lift Modernisation

In this guide, you can read about why it is more environmentally friendly to modernise an elevator rather than replace it entirely, how a modernisation project is carried out, and, not least, learn from customer stories.
